The Marblehead/Salem School of Music Guitar Building Course was created to expose students to a range of woodworking, electrical engineering, and maintenance/repair skills. At the end of each course, students will have learned valuable skills, along with creating a high quality instrument that would easily retail for more than the actual course cost.
The courses are divided into levels, with each level offering a unique collection of skills. As levels progress, the student will face additional challenges as they acquire more advanced skills, enabling them to build more highly customized instruments.
Level 1 classes have some basic parts pre-carved and/or assembled, allowing the luthier to gain knowledge while still being able to complete the instrument within in a reasonable amount of time.
Level 2 classes build upon the knowledge of Level 1. More advanced skills (and time) are required to complete the instrument. There are additional design options, and more instrument customization.
Level 3 classes focus on building an instrument from scratch. The student will design the plans in CAD (computer aided design) software, and execute the steps needed to complete their instrument with the assistance of our skilled luthiers. Students will also have the opportunity to work independently outside of the scheduled classes as well.
